You got it the first time...the five elements are Taoist, hence fire,
water, wood, metal, and earth.

My only reference linking (heh) the five elements to the five basic
'fists' of Xing Yi is currently elsewhere or I'd provide that also.

Found it!

Pi Quan (Chopping Fist): Metal
Beng Quan (Crushing Fist): Wood
Zuan Quan (Drilling Fist): Water
Pao Quan (Cannon Fist): Fire
Heng Quan (Horizontal Fist): Earth.

Here are still photos of my Sifu performing these five elements:

http://www.liuhopafa.com/Photo.htm

Heng Quan is translated here as "crossing fist" and Pao Quan as
"pounding fist". Pi Quan is "splitting fist". The correspondence between
Chinese and English is loose at the best of times.

Please note that in an internal martial art (especially), photos like this
are almost totally useless to get a sense for what it's all about. I'm
only posting it because it has pictures of Sifu. :->

cheers,
-@man.
